Wildfire Mitigation Program in Golden?
10/3/2022 (Permalink)
Our Golden, Wheat Ridge, and Evergreen teams want everyone to prepare their properties for wildfires. Wildfires are so prevalent in Colorado that there is no “season” for them – they can occur any time of the year.
Jefferson County’s SLASH program stands for sustainable lands and safer homes. This program helps reduce wildfire danger by encouraging citizens to create defensible space around their properties. Golden residents can bring their debris to these sites and dump any fire-hazardous debris from around their homes and businesses.
National Fire Protection Association Recommendations
- Keep the corner areas of a building clear of combustible materials due to the higher probability of having direct flame touching the surrounding ground
- Keep gutters free of debris and use metal gutters
- Install hard surfaces, such as a concrete walkway, or use non-combustible mulch products, such as rock
- Keep the lawn well irrigated and use low-growing herbaceous (non-woody) plants. Shrubs and trees are not recommended in the five-foot zone.
- Remove dead vegetation and implement a maintenance strategy to keep the five-foot zone clear of dead plant materials
- Mitigating home ignition zones shouldn’t stop at five feet from the building, and it should be combined with the footprint of an attached deck and area that extends away from the building up to 100 feet or to the property line
