Record-Breaking Hailstorm in Lakewood?
5/9/2022 (Permalink)
Our Golden, Wheat Ridge and Evergreen team responds to storm damage throughout the year in Lakewood. In May of 2017, a supercell thunderstorm formed in the foothills west of Denver.
The National Weather Service reported that the supercell thunderstorm moved from the western suburbs to the northern suburbs and produced large damaging hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding. Baseball-sized hail was reported, causing extensive damage to cars, homes, and businesses. Property damage occurred in many parts of Denver and the western suburbs, including Arvada, Lakewood, and Wheat Ridge. This May 8 storm is still the most expensive insured catastrophe in Colorado’s history. According to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Agency Association (RMIAA), the storm amounted to about $2.3 billion in damage. The RMIAA estimated more than 150,000 auto insurance claims and 50,000 homeowner insurance claims had been filed.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration measure hailstones by comparing them to the size of known objects:
- Pea = 1/4 inch diameter
- Mothball = 1/2 inch diameter
- Penny = 3/4 inch diameter
- Nickel = 7/8 inch
- Quarter = 1 inch — hail quarter size or larger is considered severe
- Ping-Pong Ball = 1 1/2 inch
- Golf Ball = 1 3/4 inches
- Tennis Ball = 2 1/2 inches
- Baseball = 2 3/4 inches
- Tea cup = 3 inches
- Softball = 4 inches
- Grapefruit = 4 1/2 inches
