What to do if You Have a Sink Leak

A leak under the sink--what to do:

1. If the water is gushing out like a broken dam....quickly shut off the water to the location. You can find the valve to the sink and turn the knob clockwise to stop the flow of water.

2. Clear out all of the items from underneath the sink. This will allow better, free access to the piping and allow the items to begin drying.

3. Find the source. Often, the source of unwanted water is a loose compression nut, a clog, or even some ill-fitting pipes. If you can not locate the source of the leak, you may want to contact a plumber.

4. Repair the leak. Once you find the source, it’s vital to stop it in its tracks. Your method will be dependent on what the cause is. It could be as simple as tightening the loose nut. However, if the leak persists or is more complicated, it’s time to hire a professional.

5. Clean up! Once the leak is fixed, it’s time to clean up the flood it left behind. Water that is unattended to can lead to mold growth within 48-72 hours after the initial water damage. Cleaning can be as simple as drying up with a few rags.
