Prevent Kitchen Fires
4/23/2018 (Permalink)
According to the U.S. Fire Administration cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires with unattended cooking causing nearly 90% of those fires.
Steps can be taken to prevent becoming one of those statistics. For starters having a working smoke alarm in the home reduces one’s chances of dying in a home fire by nearly half.
Other precautions to help prevent kitchen fires are:
- Never leave cooking food unattended
- Check cooking food regularly, remain in the home with food is cooking and use a time to remind yourself that the oven or stove is on
- Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking
- Keep kids away from cooking areas by enforcing a ‘kid free zone’ of three feet around the stove
- Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stove top and oven or any other appliance that generates heat
- Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup
- Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the house to make sure all stoves, ovens and small appliances are turned off
- Consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in your kitchen
- Smoke alarms save lives, install one and replace the batteries at least once a year
